John Aubrey 1626–1697, one of the first "scientific" or archaeological antiquaries, wrote much but published little, and has long been known more as the acquaintance of famous seventeenth-century Englishmen Harvey, Hobbes, Hook, Wren, and many others than as a subject for critical study in his own right.
